Learning of Aiden’s Condition

Learning of Aiden’s Condition

Hello and welcome!

Our Names are Levi and Tracy Beers, and we are pregnant with a very special baby boy named Aiden Matthew. At our first anatomical ultrasound (20 wks gestation) we were told by the ultrasound tech that there “was a problem”. She told us that normally there are 4 chambers to a baby’s heart, she couldn’t see all 4. I don’t believe either my wife nor I have ever had a more devastating and world shattering moment as that.

To add to the mounting worry and panic after this news, we were told we’d have to be scheduled to see a specialist to find out what exactly the situation is and what if anything can be done. The appointment was scheduled 5 days out. I can’t begin to tell you how you feel after news like this, not knowing what is happening, you don’t understand if you did something to cause this and you certainly don’t have any idea what the future holds. I wouldn’t wish those moments on anyone. But if anyone finds themselves in that situation, the best advice I can give you is hold onto each other and your faith. Nothing in the world can bring you closer together like being there with your significant other than through a time like this. Even though you cannot reassure each other that your child will be absolutely fine, you can reassure one another that no matter what, you’ll be there.

Fast forward to our 1st ECHO Cardiogram appointment with the most amazing cardiologist, Dr. Pei Wei from Children’s Hospital: Denver. The 3 hours it took to scan and analyze felt like the 5 days we waited for the appointment. Anxiety met a whole new level that day.

We were told Aiden had the following conditions:

- Unbalanced AVSD (Atrioventricular Septal Defect) w/ Pulmonary Atresia (He has a single ventricle and hypoplastic right heart syndrome)
- Heterotaxy Syndrome w/ possible Asplenia or Polysplenia (His digestive system is on the opposite side of his body and he may have either a single spleen, multiples or none).
