Diagnosis

On May 27th 2009, my wife Tracy and I were told that the UltraSound (U/S) tech “something is wrong” — 5 gruesome days later we found out there was a complex heart defect some Dr’s consider “incompatible with life”. Thankfully those Dr’s dont work at Children’s Hospital of Denver.

Unbalanced AVSD w/ Pulmonary Atresia and Heterotaxy Syndrome. Unbalanced AVSD means there is a hole between the right atrium and his only ventricle (people have 2), he also has no Pulmonary Valve (that is the pulmonary atresia)… He does have a few organs including his stomach on the ‘wrong’ side of his body making the possibility that his intestines may be twisted all up incorrectly (malrotation) which requires surgical intervention itself to “untwist” them. We also are running the possibility of him having asplenia (no sleep) or polysplenia (more than one spleen) — either one of those, especially asplenia is very bad. His infection fighting ability won’t exist. It’s very common in Unbalanved AVSD patients. We also, having AVSD, have a 75% change he’ll have down syndrome. We declined amniocentesis testing for an answer. With the Atresia he’s most likey going to have heart block they say and require a pacemaker. Our surgeon also told us the chance of Aiden needing a heart transplant is very real. And depending on their findings of his own fetal scan / cathederization, could be very likely.
